  • In groups of 3-4, come up with a paragraph to persuade your friends from abroad to visit Urbana-Champaign. 
  • Share your paragraph in this google doc

  • Warm-up
    • What's wrong with this memo?
    • Now check out the revised memo. How is this an improvement?

  • Now, revise this memo to be more "you" oriented.

  • Who is the audience? Why?

3. Deciding Purpose in a Memo-Writing Persuasively
  • Watch this prezi. After each point, refer the paragraph on p. 106 in our textbook.
  • How would you adapt your memos to be more persuasive?

Homework:
1. The first draft of the Diagnostic Memo Revision is due Thursday, September 11th by 4PM. Please turn in your draft to compass. Remember this is just a draft.

2. Read Ch. 5 of Improving Business Communication Skills and then evaluate your memos based on the checklist on page 115. Bring your draft to class on Thursday.

  • Look at the the sample memo I will give you. Evaluate it based on:
    • The 7 C's
    • What we learned about Memos on Tuesday 
  • Then, write how you would change the memo.

      • Who is the audience in each of these videos? Why?
  • Using this handout to help you, design a presentation in groups persuading one of the following groups to eat at McDonalds.
    • A child under 10
    • A Health-Conscious Business Person
    • A Graduate Student
    • A Couple with 3 Children

4. Now using your textbook, figure out the types of memos in groups with this handout.

Welcome to ESL 505- Day 1-General Introduction

Class Today:
Today we will get an introduction to each other, introduction to the class, and introduction to business writing.
  • Introduction to each other
    • Let's watch this youtube video.
    • Next find a partner and shake his or her hand.
    •  Then ask him or her the following questions:
      • What is your prefered name?
      • Where is your hometown?
      • What would you rather be doing right now?  (Not sleeping or work related)
      • Why UIUC?
      • What would be your dream job?
    • Next, introduce the person you interviewed to the class.

    • The 7C's
      • Compare letter A with letter B. Which do you think is better? In groups discuss why.

1. I will invite you to a box folder. Upload your photo with your preferred name. For instance, I would name my photo kat.jpg. I am terrible with names and faces, so help me out!
