Class Today:
Warm-up: Do you like doing peer-review? Why or why not? Explain in this google doc.

Group discussion: What has been hardest about writing this essay? Why? Discuss with two other people.

Peer-Review: Using this handout to help you, read a classmate's second draft of their case-based essay.

Next Class: Last class! Review the structure of case-based essays, discuss common errors and PARTY!

Homework:
1. Using this spreadsheet, pick a date and time to meet with me for the conference. We will discuss all your writing over the semester AND the case-based essay.
2. Have a second draft prepared by December 5th. Turn it into Compass.

Day 26: Integrating PIE and Cohesion into a Decision Case-Based Essay

Class Today:

1. Review Outlining

• In groups of 3, discuss was hardest about writing an outline. We will discuss your answers after 5 minutes.

2. PIE
Now we have an outline! But to develop the paragraphs we need PIE.

• Get in pairs, one student will be student A and the other one will be student B. Read the paragraphs to your partner. Ask your partner if the phrase is a P, I, or E. If your partner does not know the answer, you can help. Do not show the answers!
• Next,  download this paragraph and highlight it according to instructions. Do this with your partner.

3. Cohesion
Now you know how to develop your paragraph, but how can you make sure it makes sense?

• In groups, brainstorm words you have used to make your writing easier to understand.
• Then in groups of 3, do this cohesion worksheet together.

4. Putting it all together
Working on integrating PIE and cohesion into your first body paragraph from your outline.

• If we have time, we will do a mini peer review.

Day 25: Outlining a Decision Case-Based Essay and Action Plan

Class Today:
1. Quiz: I will give you 10 minutes to summarize the article. Submit your answer to compass for a quiz grade.

2. Warm-up: Can you guess what the five headings were? Hint: you already know the first one! Share your ideas in this google doc.

I will give you a part of the article and a heading from a different article. In your groups, summarize the section of the article you received. When you are done summarizing, talk to other groups to find the correct heading of your article.

Day 24: Evidence in a Case-Based Essay

Today you will learn:

• How to use two different types of evidence (qualitative vs. quantitative) to support your position statement in a case-based essay
• Use 4-step rebuttal strategies to defend their argument against (potential) criticism and evidence contrary to their position. 
• Qualify and moderate a claim effectively.

Class Today:

• Warm-Up: What was wrong with the bad case based analysis? Turn in your answers on compass for a quiz grade. (10 minutes only!)
• Last class you learned how to write a problem and position statement (introduction). Today we will learn how support your body (evidence).
• Evidence (body):
• What is the difference between qualitative and quantitative based evidence?
• Quantitative Evidence: Any support for your argument that can be expressed as a number (e.g., statistics, calculations). 
• Qualitative Evidence: Any support for your argument that cannot be quantified (e.g. historical narrative, policies, logical explanation that appeals to common sense, shared knowledge, beliefs and values between the reader and the writer)

Day 23-Problem and Position Statement

Today You Will Learn:

• How to explain what case-based essay is and its three essential components: position statement, evidence and action plan
• How to describe the three most common types of case-based essays and their different foci: decision, problem and evaluation essay

5. Why does GreenPeace have an issue with this?
6. How does GreenPeace go about addressing this issue?
7. Do you think Facebook will change their plan because of GreenPeace’s concerns?

1. If you presented today, book a time to meet with me here. This will be individual and the meeting will last for 30 minutes. Afterwards, you will write a reflective paragraph.

2. Read the article I will give to you, "How to write a case-based essay. The Case Study Handbook: How to Read, Discuss, and Write Persuasively About Cases." (pp.105-118). They may be a quiz on this!
