Day 24: Evidence in a Case-Based Essay

Today you will learn:
  • How to use two different types of evidence (qualitative vs. quantitative) to support your position statement in a case-based essay
  • Use 4-step rebuttal strategies to defend their argument against (potential) criticism and evidence contrary to their position. 
  • Qualify and moderate a claim effectively.
Class Today:
  • Warm-Up: What was wrong with the bad case based analysis? Turn in your answers on compass for a quiz grade. (10 minutes only!)
  • Last class you learned how to write a problem and position statement (introduction). Today we will learn how support your body (evidence).
  • Evidence (body):
    • What is the difference between qualitative and quantitative based evidence?
      • Quantitative Evidence: Any support for your argument that can be expressed as a number (e.g., statistics, calculations). 
      • Qualitative Evidence: Any support for your argument that cannot be quantified (e.g. historical narrative, policies, logical explanation that appeals to common sense, shared knowledge, beliefs and values between the reader and the writer)
      • Do Task 1 of Evidence Handout
    • Addressing Contrary Evidence and Alternative Options 
      • How would you handle alternative points?
      • Do Task 2 & 3 of Evidence Handout in your groups. I will help you.
        • Discuss answers
      • Do Task 4 of Evidence Handout in your groups. I will help you.
        • Discuss answers
    • Hedging Language
Homework:

1. Write a draft of your problem & position statement (introduction) and turn it into compass. This is due by Sunday, November 16th  at midnight. This will be part of your homework/participation grade.
2. The first full draft of your case based essay is due November 23rd by midnight.
3. Read the following GE Essay. There will be a quiz next Tuesday. Think about what headings you would use based on what we have done in class.

Day 23-Problem and Position Statement

Today You Will Learn:

  • How to explain what case-based essay is and its three essential components: position statement, evidence and action plan
  • How to describe the three most common types of case-based essays and their different foci: decision, problem and evaluation essay
Class Today:

  • Warm-Up:
    • In this google doc, write what you think is important in a case study. Why? (5 minutes)
  • Discuss this handout
  • In groups of 3-4, discuss these questions and share your answers on google docs:
    • Have you written a case-based essay or case analysis before? If so, what was the purpose and the topic? Was it one of the three types described above?  
    •    How did you structure the writing? What did you put in the beginning, the middle, and the end?
  • Return to handout
  • In the same groups, discuss these two articles:
    • 1. Heineken Case Analysis
    • 2. Wal-Mart Case Analysis 
      • Does each paper includes all three parts described above and if it follows the same order described above. Discuss why they do or do not follow the same order and structure. 
  • Position and Problem Statement Powerpoint
  • Group Presentation
Class Materials:

1. Read this bad case analysis on Heineken.  Be prepared for an in-class quiz on the reading.

  • How to discuss and debate about a case study

  • In two groups, prepare for a debate.
  • Present opinion

2. Start trying to summarize the case study we've read in class.

Day 21: Case Study Discussion Day 1

Today you will learn:
  • How to discuss a case study
Class Today:
1. 8:00 AM Class- Group 3's Presentation
3:30 PM Class- Group 2's presentation
2. Introduction to The Case Study Unit
3. Group Discussion of Article:
  1. What is GreenPeace?
  2. Compare the two entities: GreenPeace and Facebook. How are they growing or changing over time, and how influential and powerful are they currently? What are their goals?
  3. What is Facebook wanting to do in Oregon?
  4. Why is this an ideal location for Facebook?
  5. Why does GreenPeace have an issue with this?
  6. How does GreenPeace go about addressing this issue?
  7. Do you think Facebook will change their plan because of GreenPeace’s concerns?
4. Google Doc Response:
  • What would you do if you were Mark Zuckerberg? Why?
Next Class: Debate on the article!

Homework: 
1. If you presented today, book a time to meet with me here. This will be individual and the meeting will last for 30 minutes. Afterwards, you will write a reflective paragraph.

2. Read the article I will give to you, "How to write a case-based essay. The Case Study Handbook: How to Read, Discuss, and Write Persuasively About Cases." (pp.105-118). They may be a quiz on this!

3. Read the assignment prompt and rubric for The Case Study Unit
